Lovebug, full name LOVEBUG.TXT.VBS! But it prefers to leave off the 'VBS' part. It really wants nothing more than for you to read its love letter! But keep an eye on your files...
Lovebug is based on a real computer virus known as ILOVEYOU, Love Letter For You, or Lovebug. This virus used social engineering- where a hacker or scammer tricks a person into giving away information or downloading malicious software. In the case of ILOVEYOU, the email tricked users into believing they had received a declaration of love- either serious or a joke- from someone they knew. Upon opening the attached 'love letter' (a script file masquerading as a text file), most of the victims files would be replaced with copies of the script and copies of the email would be sent to everyone in the victim's contact list using their email address.
